Introduction

During the years 1994-1998 I've been living the student life in Manchester. Since then I have remained living in and around Manchester. In this time I've been sad enough to keep a list of all the pubs and bars that I have been in. The total is over 150.

This is at the moment just a short review of some of my own particular favourites from some of the more popular areas of Manchester such as Didsbury, Oxford Road and Deansgate. There are currently 86 reviews of pubs and bars contained within these pages. It is probably important to point out that I visited many of these pubs and bars during my time at the University of Manchester so my view of some of them may be very different from other people.

In my own opinion there are basically 3 different kinds of pub that are out there and people often go to different pubs for different reasons. How I see it, it breaks down like this.

1. Firstly there are the kind of pub you go to for lunch or a quiet pint or some daytime drinking sessions.
2. Then there is the pub that you go to at the weekend in your Sunday best. These places are normally a bit posh and expensive.
3. Lastly there is the kind of pub where you go to get ratted for as little financial outlay as possible and don't have to bother dressing up too much. These are normally full of young student types.

Personally, I like all three and have frequented all types on numerous and regular occasions. I've tried to cover all 3 types in this guide to appeal to everyone who wishes to drink in this fine city.

Finding Your Way Around The Site

I've divided up the site to (hopefully) make it easier to navigate. As mentioned below, I've divided the pubs into geographical areas around the city to make things easier. However, these divisions are pretty imprecise, so I've also added an alphabetical listing of pubs.

Ratings System

Most of the Pubs in this guide are decent enough but there needs to be a method for pointing out pubs which are a must visit. Therefore, this jolly pint will be used to indicate such drinking establishments.

The Pub Guide

So on to the main part of this site which is the pub guide. I reckon it's easier to go through them geographically so the areas I've divided pubs into are:

1. City Centre
2. Castlefield
3. Deansgate
4. Universities/Oxford Road
5. Fallowfield/Withington
6. Didsbury
