Manchester Pub CrawlsYou've got some spare time on your hands, so what do you do. Go to the pub! Great idea but you don't want to be stuck in the same place staring at the same faces, and drinking the same beer all day, do you? Here lies the beauty of the pub crawl. Why allow one drinking establishment the honour of your company and beer tokens when you can spread the fun (or vomit) through many differing public houses. And lets face it, a pub crawl is an almost religious experience. Next time you're on one, take a moment to look at the faces of the general public as you stumble through the streets between pubs, shouting humourous anicdotes to your crawl companions. Do you see that mix of repulsion and sheer and utter jealousy on their faces? This is because whilst they spend their days sober enough to complete their daily tasks, you can get completely rat-arsed on your student loan, dole check, or holiday pay check, all the while on that magical one way trip to Chunderville. Bliss indeed. So, we all know that pub crawls are the single greatest idea man has ever come up with, but where to go in Manchester? Well, if you're a triple hard bastard, you'll want to try the infamous Didsbury Dozen. Didsbury has changed alot over the last few years, but this is the semi-offical traditional crawl. This one is truely hard work as the pubs are so close together that there's no chance to take a breather. Timing is therefore crucial. I suggest you attempt this crawl during the week because Didsbury gets so busy at the weekend that you'll spend half your time queuing up at the bar and trying to get served. You'll probably want to start the crawl mid-afternoon to make sure you haver enough time to get through all the pubs. You can see more about the Didsbury Dozen if you click here. (TM) If that doesn't tickle your fancy, try this one below; So. Central Manchester Pub CrawlThis is not a widely recognised crawl but does encompass pubs that are of differing style and character. It starts in the town centre and works its way towards Oxford Road so its perfect for those of you resident in South Manchester. Again I would advise giving over several hours to this crawl starting at the latest at five p.m. as it goes through twelve drinking establishments. Similarly I would not advise the making of any great plans for the following morning, if only because the resulting hangover will leave you incapable. To do the crawl properly it would be wise to try and have a time table to stick to otherwise by last orders the crawl might only be half complete, disaster! It starts on Deansgate at The Moon Under Water, a good place to start as it is a well known landmark and easy to find in order to meet people. From there move onto the Rat and Parrott, a pub located down the alleyway that connects the centre of Manchester with St. Anne's Square. After there make your way to the Athenaeum for a change in surroundings and then towards Huxter's just off Piccadilly. Having completed the first stage in the town centre it is time to start heading towards Oxford Road. This involves first heading to O'Sheas, admittedly it's a bit of a trek but then it is a chance to get some fresh air. After this round, carry on down Princess Street and there is the heart of the crawl. First there is Overdraught, then next to that The Old Garrett, on the corner there is Joshua Brookes and then The Lass O'Gowrie. Having got this far Oxford Road is within sight and the crawl is three quarters through. It will take great presence of mind to remember what happens next. Once onto Oxford Road turn left at the BBC, heading for McNallies. After this pub the next port of call is Jabez Clegg for the penultimate pint. Thankfully, there is not far to go for last orders, getting a round in at The Hogshead near the MRI. Having completed the crawl give yourself a pat on the back. The truly hardcore can now make their way to a night club but do not complain if they turn you away for being drunk! (KS) |
